Only a very good (or lucky) singer can stay in key when singing a cappella. Generally, what happens is that the key starts to wander all over the place - and you can't tell whether the kid has no idea of pitch/key or if it's just because they are singing a cappella.
You also can't tell if they can stay in rhythm and key with a piano when they sing a cappella.
And finally, they tend to pick songs that sound TERRIBLE a cappella - you have no way of knowing if they can sing because it's just such a bad song.
'Course, a ton of the girls picked songs from "Chicago" and sang them terribly because all the songs from Chicago are practically written for baritones. Not a one of them could find the key because it was so much lower than they were thinking it was.
