I just called and found out how much my ticket for "noisy assembly" is gonna cost me.

$110!

Jesus Fuck! How is this MORE expensive than a speeding ticket??

That sucks, but at least be glad it wasn't more. Our buddy Brad got a noise ticket in Edina (when he had 4 friends over, no music), and it cost him $500.00.

Can you contest it in court as easily as a traffic ticket?

I don't really see how. I was warned that if they got called again I'd get a ticket and the party didn't stop.
Granted, they were called again because downstairs freakazoid is a nutcase. But I don't know if I can argue that.

Most tickets can at least be reduced if you contest them. Since your neighbor is your accuser, the fine may be waived if she choses not to show up.

Best to check with a lawyer to see if it's worth it, though. It probably isn't....

I'd be willing to contribute five or ten bucks to that. I wonder if all the other noisy (and happy) party-goers would? We could negate the cost of the ticket pretty easily for you that way. :-)

Yeah, I'd be willing to do that too. It was all our "fault", after all.

I don't think you can use the defense "my neighbor is insane." It's a dispute between private citizens. Besides, the city of Minneapolis probably needs the fine money to pay for stuff. It sucks to be on the receiving end of accusation being nine-tenths of the law, but I can't think of anything to combat it with. Maybe testimony from other neighbors?

i'll totally kick in 5-10. if it's gotta cost 110 bucks to have fun then fine - how much do i gotta throw down?

but next time maybe we could pay the downstairs neighbor 50$ to lighten up a bit.

If I were staying in this place...and if SHE were staying in this place - I would totally adopt your plan.

Here's your Crazy Lady Appeasement Fee, now leave me alone!

Crazy Lady Fee

How about a Crazy Lady Abusement fee party?

Works like this:

1. Guest arrives at Windelina Building entrance.
2. Guest buzzes the Windelina Apartment.
3. Windelina comes to entrance to open door for Guest.
4. Guest offers recommended Abuse Donation of $5 to Windelina.
5. In exchange for Abuse Donation, Guest buzzes Crazy Lady's apartment.
6. Windelina and guest proceed to the Windelina apartment where quiet merriment ensues.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 until Crazy Lady is sprinting down hallway, foaming at the mouth to yell at offenders.
8. Repeat steps 1-7. Preferably with well placed web-cam.
9. Eventually Crazy Lady is found face-down and twitching on the hallway floor.
10. The world becomes a slightly better place.

Speeding ticket costs my two cents

When is the last time you received a speeding ticket? Must have been a while ago. It is usually at least $100.00 for the ticket and several hundred more in reoccuring insurance fees for your vehicles. It's worth it to fight every moving violation because of the long term costs. Did you know insurance companies subsidize the cost of radars to the police forces? It is truely a racket.

Now for the bad news. I will not contribute to your fine and here are the reasons why:

1. Before the cops left with the warning, you jumped up and down to annoy the downstairs neighbor, and more importantly, piss off the cops before they even left the building.

2. You went down to confront your neighbor after the cops left. Probably prompting a second, more angry call to the police from you derranged downstairs neighbor.

3. You wanted the ticket. You made that clear to everyone at the party. That means you also want to pay the consequences, even if they were monitary or a night in jail. Be glad the cops did not give you the night in jail option, if they were real dicks, they could of.

I personally think the cops let you off easy and for $110 dollars fine. You acquired your right of passage of having the cops bust your party, which makes for storytelling. Just pay the fine and accept no monies from any parties that were at your event. Monte and yourself made out well enough in the bottles of wine that the guests purchased and they should not be levied for the ticket that you wanted.

Just for clarification, I did not go down to talk to Crazy Lady until after I received the ticket (after the third visit). And I was perfectly nice to her in the face of her lunatic ravings.

And I don't remember Windy even breathing hint one about people chipping in to help her pay. Everyone who's offering (and btw, Weasel_king and I are happy to chip in, Windy) did it spontaneously and of their own free will. I don't feel guilty about being part of a group that was loud enough to get the cops called, because Windy said /not/ to be quiet. But at the same time, I want to make sure that Windy feels she can feasibly throw more parties.

BTW, the manager is on site, would she/he be willing to come in if you contest and say that in fact, the noise level was not what s/he would consider unreasonable? And that crazy downstairs neighbor has a habit of calling over your cats walking across the floor>

At this point, I'm not willing to throw more time/money at this. Fighting the ticket would require taking time off from work somehow. Getting the building manager in to testify would mean HER taking time off.
I was warned and I failed to comply. *shrug*

I am going to tell my building manager how much the ticket was for, though. Just as an FYI. It might be helpful to her somehow in her efforts to remove Crazy Basement Lady from the premises.

Windy will or won't throw parties at her leisure; it's got nothing to do with whether I give her money or not.

I don't feel guilty about the noise (which wasn't unreasonable) nor the fact that I was present when the ticket was issued. But it's because a host is ultimately responsible for her guests, as Windy was.

I agree with Windy that fighting the citation is probably more time and effort than she'd get back in potential waived fees.
