Callbacks were last night and then I sat down and cast the show.

Good heavens - we had so many audition for this show! I could've had about 35 girls in the chorus. I winnowed it down to 17. (Still exorbitant, but oh well.)

My Lilli will play the part terrifically - but she doesn't have the upper range solidly in place.
My Lois can sing the part but I'm not sure of her acting.
Fred is good, but I don't know if he can be GREAT.
I'm taking a huge chance on Bill.

This kid came in and sang a cappella (no song prepared). About half the kids do that (I hate it and will implement system changes in the future). He sang "Stairway to Heaven". Oy. A good sounding voice, stayed in the key, good support and projection. He also read well. So I called him back on a whim. With the way the casting was falling out, he was gonna end up as one of the three suitors. And he's the only one of the three with the right look. He didn't read music but he picked it up by ear and sang it dead on. I'm not sure if he has the presence or confidence though. It'll be interesting!

There were a few girls from "Guys and Dolls" that I didn't cast at all - I'm sure that's distressing them.
(No Christian Freak Girl did NOT audition. She told my stage manager that "she wasn't ready yet". Wise of her.)

If you saw "Guys and Dolls", then you will recognize
Fred/Petruchio - who played Sky Masterson
Lilli/Kate - who played Adelaide
Paul (Too Darn Hot) - who wore the bright green pants and sang "Fugue for Tinhorns"
Hattie (Another Op'nin') - who was General Cartwright, the short loud girl
Gangster 2 - who was Big Jule

I'm feeling trepidatious right now.

oh - and the returning kids loved my hair, of course.

Well, at least you know you have his attention, so that, even if he can't conduct, he'll at least make an effort in helping you get the players you need...

And if he or anybody else in the music dept. is not available, you always have me in your back pocket...yes, that's right; even though I'm now working PT at the Southdale AppleStore (where all the cool kids are), I'll drop it all in half a second to work with you...I mean that...just sayin', is all...

You need to make a huge sign that reads "NO STAIRWAY!"

Why do you hate that?

Only a very good (or lucky) singer can stay in key when singing a cappella.
Generally, what happens is that the key starts to wander all over the place - and you can't tell whether the kid has no idea of pitch/key or if it's just because they are singing a cappella.

You also can't tell if they can stay in rhythm and key with a piano when they sing a cappella.

And finally, they tend to pick songs that sound TERRIBLE a cappella - you have no way of knowing if they can sing because it's just such a bad song.

'Course, a ton of the girls picked songs from "Chicago" and sang them terribly because all the songs from Chicago are practically written for baritones. Not a one of them could find the key because it was so much lower than they were thinking it was.

Sounds like things are going great. Of course, I know nothing about theater, so what do I know?

Of course they loved your hair! Doesn't everyone? ^^

Well, my female in-laws clearly don't. But they know enough not to say anything too derogatory.

Agreed. Her high notes sounded rather brittle in G&D.

Fred/Petruchio - who played Sky Masterson. Fred is good, but I don't know if he can be GREAT.

Sky was a pretty solid part. Make sure you drill him on his blocking and make sure he finishes his lines before he exits the stage rather than fading to a mumble as walking off.
