Hostage...Dancer...Hostage...Dancer
The evening went well. I choreographed the first of the real "dance" numbers in the show with Bianca and her three suitors. I'll be changing and tweaking to adapt to their abilities for a while, but we got the whole thing done and they weren't bad! I hope they had fun with it - it's hard to tell. I know it's outside the comfort zone for them.
I also finally got to meet my set builder/technical overseer, Phyllis. *relief* They're starting this afternoon and have plans for building almost every afternoon. Thank god. That's one big potential problem headed off.
Now, that dratted orchestra.
And the costumes.
After a good rehearsal, I stopped by Long John Silver's and got a complimentary meal along with my denied hushpuppies. (Last visit, I paid for hushpuppies but did not get them.) I got home with the food and Monte had purchased nummy cider. So we ate and drank and regaled each other with tales of the evening. Including a discussion/analysis of why spinning in a lightsaber duel looks cool but is probably not actually a good idea or useful. Unless you have a double-bladed lightsaber. And yes, there were physical re-enactments.
I lurv my geek.
To bed for some reading. (Currently re-reading the "His Dark Materials" trilogy.)
Up early to do more choreographing for tonight. I'm very pleased with myself on this one. See, I own the movie version, and the stage revival DVD. It would be very easy to just copy alot of the stuff. I do watch them for inspiration, and shamelessly lift really clever bits, but I want to do my own stuff. With "Bianca", I'm feeling very clever. Now, the first third is pretty much standard, so I don't feel like I'm "copying". There's just something rather obvious about how you should stage that section, and anything else would feel like overkill. And probably look like it too.
Then, I had to shift things around because the set for the revival had a second story (and a third story too!) to the set. So, I'm forced to change things around. And then, there's the big solo dance that Bill does for the end. Except, I don't have a solo dancer for Bill. So - I came up with something that I think is clever, cute, easy for the kids, and continues the ideas/themes/feel of the song with the denouement that is required.
And I figured it all out in 45 minutes.
I'm looking forward to doing a show next spring where I don't have to figure this stuff out, though.
Wednesday and Thursday off from rehearsal. Directors meeting Wednesday. Thursdsay will be spent choreographing.
And Monte and I are planning a brief dash up to Duluth for weekend after next. It will mean missing Ethel's Iron Alcohol Party (shit!), but I've never been to Duluth and I've wanted to go for years.
I still refuse to support revisionist history, so no Star Wars. Or George Bush for that matter. (Hah!)
I'm bummed about this whole document-scandal thing, largely because it will obfuscate the real story which is the undeniable gaps and unexplained facts in Bush's record and the way it is being manipulated.
And in other news, an excellent article in Salon.com today about Voter Intimidation: It's not just for Third World Countries and the Jim Crow South!

If you want a list of things to check out in Duluth,
here's a cool little website:
http://www.perfectduluthday.com/cruise.html
Fitger's Brewhouse is where we usually go with our Duluth friends for good food and beer...
The Pizza Luce link is unfortunately not working;
otherwise it's a great place to find live shows and more good food...
And the Slim Goodbuzz's Guide link is worth reading, if nothing else but to read his unvarnished opinions on ALL the local watering holes (he has a rather rustic aethestic that I'm sure neither of us would not agree with, but it's hilarious to read nonetheless...)
