So - I get to spend part of today negotiating new car insurance.

See, my old insurance wasn't charging me the "surcharges" for having a ticket. I was being charged a higher rate for having a bad driving record, but not charged for the individual infractions. Does that make sense to you?

Me neither.

I pointed out that I could get my old rate through a competitor. They don't care.

And yes, they will still take the money come January 1st, no way to stop it. BUT if I cancel the policy before the 1st, they will reimburse that money back to me. So, there's a germ of good news there.

Insurance is such bullshit. I understand the basics of it - pay a little bit each month to safeguard you from ever needing a huge amount of money in a hurry. But the realities (that the minute you actually USE the insurance that you're paying every month for, they start charging you an arm and a leg because you're a "risk") make my teeth clench.

I'm feeling some anarchy coming on. Watch out.

I'd make sure you get the insurance with the other company at the lower rate first before you change. Sometimes Insurance companies are slimy and tell each other 'Oh we're charging this person this' and change the rate on yah.

My auto insurance is Unitrin, and it's as good as you can hope to find, budgetwise. The only problem is that you can't pay on a monthly basis. It's 3 or 6 month intervals only. Which sucks for me, because in my case the 6 months fall at just after Christmas and CONvergence weekend. But other than that, I'd recommend them.

Hm. I checked the web and Unitrin doesn't do auto - but Unitrin direct does. Only their website says they don't offer auto insurance in Minnesota.
Weird.

Aw hell, maybe I'm grandfathered in.

I've been with them for a few years, and I remember now there was some sort of reorganization/cutback thing a couple years ago. Maybe they're not taking new customers in Minnesota.

Crap. Sorry.

Avoid Geico like the plague (unless you really want to pay twice as much...) Save you 15%, my ass! [livejournal.com profile] chebutykin and I have both been very happy with State Farm (she's the one that refered me to them) and they let you pay monthly.
